Birthday Party DJs

Hi There,

You are most likely reading this page because you have engaged a Musiq Entertainment DJ to provide the tunes for an upcoming birthday party you are organising.

With most events, unless otherwise specified at the time of booking we will be providing you with a DJ for the entire duration of the event, a PA system, DJ console and a wireless microphone should you have any speeches and/or announcements that you would like to make.

If you have received our DJ as part of your package with one of the venues we supply to all events at WatervieW, L'Aqua, Starroom and Centennial Parklands Dining definitely come with the wireless microphone in the package. Events at Pavilion will usually use the in house wireless microphone at the venue and not that from our DJ console.

We have had DJs at birthday parties ranging from 2nd birthday parties through to 90th birthday parties (yes he did dance - half a song at a time). Our DJs are very skilled at reading the crown, playing age appropriate music for your guests and ensuring everyone has a good time.

With many birthday parties you may no in advance what styles and artists you would prefer to be played. You may even have some specific requests that you wish to be played at specific times. If this is the case then please email your requests or instructions through to Rupert r@musiq.com.au or give him a call to have a chat 0412 024 012. If you are giving us specific request please give us at least a weeks notice so that the DJ can go through and make sure that he has all the music you have asked for.

To give you an idea about songs and genres that our DJs would usually play, and be open to playing at your event we have listed some common music selections on the link below.

All the best with your event, please contact us if you have any questions.

Your DJ's selection of their favourite slow and chilled songs

Providing Music for your DJ to play at your wedding

Sometimes it is the case that you have requested songs for your reception that your Musiq Entertainment DJ has been unable to source. This may be because the song is rare, a traditional ethnic song, or that the song is a special edit that you have made. In these cases we will contact you and ask you to provide such songs, it may be the reason that you are reading this right now.

When providing music we prefer that the song be provided as an mp3 file however we can also play Audio CD's. You can provide the files by posting us a disc or USB drive to PO box 6392 North Sydney NSW 2059, leave them with your venue coordinator or even have someone bring them to your reception on the day. If it is just one song and an mp3 file you may even wish to email the song to us at weddings@musiq.com.au

Please make sure CD's or USB's they are clearly labelled with your name and wedding date and that either on the request form, or in the file name or on a slip of paper with the CD that you have given us clear instructions on when we are meant to play each of the songs that you have provided.

Your DJ will endeavour to return to you all USB's and original CD's that you provide to us at your reception however burnt CD's will usually be discarded when we are done with them.

We assume that you are in line with all licensing and copyright legalities involved with ownership of the music that you provide for us to play at your own private event. We will only play the music at your event and will remove the files from our computers and drives that were required in order to play the songs immediately following your reception.

Formality Requests

Cutting of the Cake

This formality is usually completed directly after speeches when everyone is quiet and hence a song is played softly just to break the silence. Usually the couple select an easily identifiable slow love or instrumental song to be played. Please note that your MC will usually speak over the song to direct those taking photos and mention the bride and grooms toast. Many couples will only get through the first minute or two of the song as usually the evening will then move directly to the bridal waltz. The cake song is a great place to put that song you love the lyrics of but isn’t a good song to dance to (hence not suitable for the bridal waltz) and isn’t lively enough for an entrance or general dancing song.

First Dance

Most of the time this song is the first dance that the bride and groom have together as husband and wife. Sometimes the bride will have the first dance with her Father and then be handed over to her new husband for the second dance.

Most people will have a song already in mind for their first dance. But just in case you don't read on as we may be able to help you choose.

Some fallacies to do with the bridal waltz are as follows;
- It needs to be a song that you can "waltz" or dance too. Although it does look great to waltz properly to the song, or even have a choreographed dance it is just as effective to "hold and sway" for the bridal waltz. Its all about the emotion of the moment and what you as the Bride and Groom feel comfortable with.
- It needs to be a song everyone knows. If we had a dollar for every time a guest has
come up after an atypical bridal waltz and asked what the song is and told us how
much they loved it we would be turning up to DJ weddings in much flashier cars than
we do.
- The bridal party must, or must not be invited to dance halfway through the song. The
decision is totally up to you. If you feel comfortable dancing alone as a couple for the whole song do so, if you'd rather the BP and immediate family join in then let your MC know to invite them.
- It needs to be a slow song. Your first dance can be as fast or slow as you want. Most of the time you’re the only ones that will be dancing to it! We've had Kiss "I was made for loving you" and Sam and Dave "Hold On I'm Coming" as a first dances and they both worked a treat.

Sometimes the bride and groom will edit their first dance to suit their requirements. Pull the intro, turn it into a fun medley or many other edits. We are more than happy to play any version of the song or edit to it that you would like all we need you to do is provide the song for us.

Second and Third Dance

The reason we have the second and third dance listed down on the request form is because these are often special songs for the bride and groom and their guests as well. Usually your family and bridal party will join you on the dance floor for the 2nd song, and the remainder of your guests for the third song although it is your prerogative as to when you want people to join and in what order. Just be sure to let your MC know.

Many couples are worried about the 2nd dance and want to pick something that people know for them to dance to. Our response is always if ever you are going to pop a song that people may not know into the mix, this is the perfect time. From our experience when guests are asked to join the bridal party on the dance floor most guests will do so regardless of whether they are familiar with the song. It’s almost like they are obliged to dance.

Our little tip is to use a third dance that leads well into the style of dance music you have suggested. There are many songs that start nice and slow and end with a bang, or even more than are both slow but still have a party feel to them. See our suggestions for some ideas.

Last Dance

For the last dance of the evening, we usually recommend that the MC announce this song so that all your guests know that it is their last chance to dance with the bride and groom before the farewells. Most of the time this last dance is just before the bouquet and garter and farewell (circle or archway).

It is not necessary to request a song for this part of the evening. Your DJ can always choose a song that based on your requests and what music people have been enjoying throughout the night.

Often the last dance is where the bride and groom will choose to dance the final song with a close relative and dedicate the song to them accordingly (e.g Father - Daughter, Mother - Son dances). This can be done either with the rest of the guests joining in as well or by having the dance floor to yourselves. Once again let your MC know if you want this organised.

Bouquet

Most brides will still choose to throw their bouquet for the single ladies to fight over at the end of the night. Usually the song chosen for this has a feminine edge to it. Your DJ will play this song whilst the MC is arranging all the single ladies to prepare for the throwing, and continue it for the throwing of the bouquet and whilst the successful catcher is being congratulated.

Garter

The garter song is played from when the Groom is preparing to remove the garter belt from his wife's thigh up until he throws it to the successful catcher. Typical songs for the garter are ones that are chosen for their sexiness, or ones that are chosen for the fact that they will fire up a mob of single men waiting to catch it.

Sometimes the couple will choose two songs for the garter. One appropriate for the removal and another appropriate to fire up the single men.

Farewell

Most couples will chose to farewell their guests with either a farewell circle, a farewell archway or both.

Circle

The farewell circle is when the MC gathers all guests around the outside of the dance floor. The couple then goes around and thanks each guest for coming on the night. Typically the bride and groom will go in opposite directions but many will also choose to head around the circle together. Typically you will allow 12-20 minutes for your circle so 3-5 songs should be sufficient. You DJ will just play these songs at a background level for your guests to enjoy during this time. Most of the time the song is about ending the night, thanking your guests or just more of the style of music that was chosen for the background music during meals.

Archway

A farewell archway happens when the MC gathers all guests into two lines to form a guard of honour for the bride and groom as they leave. It is usually done in lieu of or after a farewell circle. Usually only one song is required for the archway. A song that mentions farewells, or has lyrics mentioning how much of a great time that you have had is common at this time.

A tip is if you cannot think of a song for your farewell archway to chose the same song that you came into. This usually bookends the night well.

Your DJ will play the one songs whilst you are leaving, in the case that your guests take longer than the duration of the song to get ready for the archway or you take longer to proceed through the archway your DJ will typically repeat this song as necessary until you leave your reception.

Entrance Music

The tradition is of course for the MC to introduce the guests of honour B&G (short for Bride and Groom) the Bridal Party (BP) and sometimes parents and immediate family into the reception in a grand manner. Usually the B&G select an upbeat “party” style track to get everyone in the celebration mood. It is up to you if you would like to select the same song for everyone to be introduced to or to go with multiple entrance songs.

If you choose one song for everyone to enter to your DJ will typically play this song from the beginning when the MC introduces the first couple. We will then fade the music down but keep the track running whilst the MC introduces each following couple into the room. When it comes time for the bride and groom to enter your DJ will then play the track even louder from the most appropriate part of the song (usually the chorus) for their entrance. We keep the track going until the bride and groom are seated.

Many couple choose a song for each group of people entering. One for parents/family, another for the bridal party and a final song of course bride and groom.

Other couple choose a separate song for each couple entering.

In the case you are using multiple entrance songs, we allow for you to specify the section of the song that you would like us to cue the song to when the couples are being introduced. If you do not choose a cue point for the songs, your DJ will usually choose the most appropriate section for you. This is usually the chorus or the beginning of the song.

Remember to include everyone that will be invited on your request form when you are filling it in.

Wedding Request Form Instructions

The following instructions are for the 'Musiq Entertainment Wedding Request Form' that can be found in .doc format here and pdf format here here

We recommend that you have a quick read of these instructions and check out the links to some examples before completing the form.

RECEPTION DETAILS

Please include phone numbers and email addresses that you will be able to check in the days before your wedding. Many people are off work at this stage and not connected to their work email or mobile phone so be sure to make it so we can contact you.

Please also ensure to give us your MC's name so that we can identify them at the beginning of your reception to go over the order of everything along with your venue supervisor or manager.

ENTRANCE SONGS

It is up to you whether to have one entrance song for each couple entering, one for everyone entering or a song for the family members, a song for the bridal party and a song for the bride and groom.

We have left it up to you to fill in this entire section of the form, even let us know where you would like to cue to song to. Please follow this guideline however;

Please provide descriptions as follows "Brides Parents", "1st Bridal Couple", "Flower Girls" or "Bride & Groom".

Make sure you have the form filled out in the order that the couples will be entering and that it corresponds to the details you have given the MC.

When letting us know which section of the song you would like played please give a description such as "beginning", "chorus" or "DJ Choice". Slightly different versions of songs might start at different times so giving us a time is often not helpful. You can even just give us the line of the song that you want to start with. If we aren't sure where you want the song we will run it past you when we speak to you on the week of your wedding.

For a more in depth discussion of entrance songs, including some examples please click here

FORMALITY SONGS

If you are unsure what we mean by any of the sections in these instructions. Please see our more in depth discussion of each formality and the types of songs we recommend for each one.

Please be sure to put something in each cell even if it is not applicable. If you are not doing the specified formality put "N/A" in the cell. If you have a band or performer please write "band" or "singer" as appropriate. If you want a particular remix or version of a song or you want a song faded out earlier, or started as a certain point please also specify this.

BACKGROUND MUSIC

The background music that you choose will be played during the pre dinner drinks and the meal service intervals at any stage when there is no announcements being made or formalities going on.

Most of the time clients will specify a couple of genres, artists or compilation albums that they would prefer played during this time. You can however create extra space on the form and give us a list of songs that we will play.

Please see our commonly selected background music styles/artists and genres for some examples of typical background music selections.

You typically have two to three hours of background music played at a wedding reception and we can play about 15 to 20 songs per hour so keep this in mind if you are selecting specific songs.

DANCE MUSIC

The important part with selecting your dance music is to give your DJ a fair idea of the styles of music that you would like played at your reception. Usually a few ideas of artists or genres, and then a couple of song suggestions for each genre will give you DJ an excellent idea and allow them to add other songs that we know are popular and work well with your selections.

We are however happy for you to provide us with a more extensive list of specific requests if you so desire. You may choose to go to the other extreme and let your DJ read the crowd on the night and play what they think will work best. Our DJ's are experienced in any of these situations and more than happy to help. You can trust us to either play your exact requests, or read the crowd and play music that we know from experiences gets people dancing at weddings.

Feel free to give us a quick couple of sentence description of what you want if it is easier to describe that way. In any case if we are unsure as to what you would like played we will discuss this with you prior to the night.

Click here for a list of commonly selected genres and artists we find get asked for a lot at weddings.

Most receptions will have between an hour and a half and two and a half hours of dancing. This means that your DJ will most likely play 25 to 50 dance songs. If your list is longer and we cannot play everything from it, your DJ will select the ones that they feel will work best on the dance floor.

At the bottom of the dance music section of the form we ask whether you would like us to accept requests form guests or not. If you say yes and your crazy relative (yes we all have one) asks for something totally not in sync with what you have asked for don't worry we will still politely refuse.

It is more a questions of whether you are happy for us to take the general direction that your guests are asking for with the music on the night or whether you would like us to adhere more stringently to your guidelines.

MUSIC NOT TO BE PLAYED

This final section of the form is where we ask you if you have any specific songs/artists or genres that you do not wish to be played. You don't need to write everything down here, we use common sense in not playing a country ballad in the middle of your dancing bracket if all you have asked for is Current Top 40, some disco and R'n'B music. It is more if you have asked for 70's and disco music but for some reason do not like ABBA then let us know here or we might make the mistake of playing it.

Usually most brides and grooms will either love or despise the idea of having formation dancing at their wedding. We find this the most common thing to be places in the "music not to be played" section. If you ask for us not to 'play formation' dancing then don't worry we won't play the Nutbush, Macarena, Ketchup Song, Bustop or the Chicken Dance at your wedding.

Just like every part of your form, if we are not totally clear on what you have asked for we will clarify this with you prior to the night.

Its now time for you to head off and fill out your form. If you do have any questions at all please email us at any time.

REQUEST FORM EXAMPLES

Please click here if you would like to see some examples of completed request forms.

If you are considering providing us with the music for your wedding please read this information on providing us with music.

Packaged Wedding DJ Time Line

UPON BOOKING WITH YOUR CHOSEN VENUE.
Your venue will automatically book us in for your wedding reception. We are booked in for the duration of your reception, we play music from when the first guests arrive until you make your exit. We also supply a PA system suitable for the number of guests you have booked for and a wireless microphone for all speeches and announcements.

AS YOUR WEDDING DAY APPROACHES.
As your wedding approaches, we will contact you to introduce ourselves. Most people who are reading this are doing so because we have spoken to you and emailed you the link to this page. At this stage we also book and confirm DJ's for the weekend that your wedding falls on. We don't assign DJ's to each job at this time, we wait until we have all the requests back in order to match the DJ's to the music requests you have made.

It is at this stage that we also introduce you to our request form.

You have plenty of time from this point until two weeks prior to your wedding to fill out this form with all your requests for the night. If you are stuck at any stage please do not hesitate to contact us at any time. Many people struggle to think of songs for certain formalities, and others will have too many songs for one section and need advice on whittling the list down. We are always here to help with any questions.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING.
This is the stage where we require your completed form to be returned to us. You can return it earlier if you like. If you are still tossing up between songs or not sure about one or two songs here and there please still send us your nearly complete form. Knowing the styles of music and the specific requests that you have is imperative when it comes to selecting the best DJ for your reception.

Once we have all the requests back for the weekend that your reception is on we go through and select an appropriate DJ for you. All of our DJ's are more than capable of playing all styles of popular music but at times we will like to match a DJ to a request form where their favourite artists or styles are highlighted.

Your DJ will then go through your form and ensure that they have all your music. In the case that they are unable to provide one or more of your requests we will contact you asking you to provide the song or suggest a replacement. If your DJ has any questions about any music of information on your form we will also be sure to let you know.

THE WEEK OF THE BIG DAY.
We usually contact everybody on the Wednesday prior to your wedding date. We give you a call on the phone numbers provided on the form. This is just to touch base, see if you have any changes at all, let you know who your DJ is if we haven't already informed you and discuss any questions we have about your form and ensure that everyone is on the same page.

YOUR WEDDING RECEPTION.
Your DJ will arrive an hour before the first guests to set up the DJ equipment for your reception. It usually takes us 30 minutes or so to set the gear up. Sometimes with the venues we constantly supply DJ's for the gear will remain set up from the night before. In these cases our DJ will be at your reception 30 minutes prior to your first guests arrival.

We play all the music you have asked for all the formalities at the right time, we play your background music and dance suggestions and follow all of your instructions on the request form.

Once you have said your final farewells to your guests and exited the reception and your guests are leaving your DJ will begin packing up the gear without disrupting your departing guests.

DJs for Christenings

Hi There,

You have most likely been sent to this page because you have a Christening coming up and us here at Musiq Entertainment will be providing you with a DJ and PA system for the event.

Lets firstly let you know what you will be receiving from us;
 - A PA system suitable to the number of guests/room that you are having the Christening in,
 - A wireless microphone for any speeches or announcements,
 - One of our fantastic DJs who will play music for the entire scheduled duration of your event.

Musiq Entertainment can also supply you with other services like a photo booth for your event, Dry Ice effects and some mood/theme lighting for your room. All of these items come at discounted prices when you already have a Musiq Entertainment DJ.

Now you may ask what styles of music will your DJ play for you?

The answer is we will play whatever music you want us to play. You can let us know the styles and even specific requests you are after for your event, or our DJs are more than happy to play music that they feel appropriate using their experience, and feel the crowd and take requests from guests throughout the event. Alternatively we can do a bit of a combination of both.

In order to help you out in choosing music we have created a list of popular dance and background music artists grouped by styles that you can choose from. We have provided a link for you at the bottom of the page.

So all we need you to do is decide what songs if any you would specifically like to request for the Christening and send your requests straight to us emailing r@musiq.com.au with your requirements at least one full week before the event date to give us time to organise your music. We will be back in touch with you to let you know who your DJ is and to discuss anything we feel needs to be discussed.

One last point. If you are after traditional music to suit your cultural background(s) all of our DJs are happy to play any music you wish to supply. In particular we have a limited number of Greek and Arabic DJs available for your event, so please contact us immediately if you wish to request one of these.

All the best with your event organisation. If you have any questions at all call Rupert on 0412 024 012 or Nev on 0487 379 423

Musiq Entertainment School Formal DJ's

Hi There,

If we have sent you to this page it means that you must play a part in organising a school formal for which Musiq Entertainment will be providing the DJ. We are happy to be on board and ensure that everyone has a fantastic time at your formal.

As part of the package at the formal you will receive;
- A DJ from Musiq Entertainment that is experienced in DJing at School Formals for the duration of the formal.
- A full suitable PA system
- A wireless microphone for any speeches or announcements throughout the night.
- Your DJ's collection of music which includes most popular styles and are always up to date with the latest releases.

MUSIC REQUESTS AT SCHOOL FORMALS

We recommend that you leave it up to your guests on the night to make requests for your DJ to play. We are more than happy to play appropriate requests throughout the night and are often bombarded with so many requests that we only get to play the most popular of the songs. Obviously, we will play any songs that you may consider important or sentimental for the school year (for example a song that was used in a school performance. If this is the case please email Nev (nev@musiq.com.au) with your specific requests and he will ensure that the DJ has them available.

If you have any further questions about the DJ for your formal or indeed out photo booths please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

All the best with the formal organisation!
